Scuba Diving : There are many interesting scuba diving sites around Bali. Amed and Tulamben are becoming recognized as the best place in Bali to learn free diving (apnea or breath-hold diving). Several free diving schools exist in this region of Bali.

Warm waters, crowds of young backpackers, cheap living and reliable waves keep Bali near the top of the world’s surfing destinations. The southern coast at Kuta, Legian and Canggu, the Bukit Peninsula and Nusa Lembongan are the primary draws. Expert surfers usually head for the big breaks off the Bukit Peninsula, while beginners will find the gentler, sandy areas between Kuta and Legian to be ideal for learning.

Yachting

The waters of Serangan harbor are protected from big waves and swells by a reef, but open to the winds. It is an excellent location for the sport of sailing. You can easily drive onto Serangan island as it is connected to Bali by a bridge. When driving to the island you will see a spectacular view of the bay on your left. Many private yachts and magnificent traditional Indonesian Phinisi schooners are anchored in the smooth waters of the bay. On the beach front of Serangan you may meet other sailors who come to learn or practice their skills and share their knowledge and experience of yachting in Indonesia.

Sport fishing is an increasingly popular activity with visitors to the island. Trolling, jigging and bottom fishing can all be very rewarding, with large game far from unusual. Visit Tanah Lot Temple

Tanah Lot Temple is probably the most famous attraction in Bali and is a Hindu temple that sits atop a large and scenic rock formation.

Over the years the sea has separated the rock from the mainland, and at high tide the rock is completely surrounded making this one of the most amazing sights in Indonesia.

Many people flock here for the sunsets around the temple so make sure you go early to get the best spot to watch the spectacle.

When the tide is low it is possible to walk across the sand to the temple.

Spend time at Canggu beach

The beach in Canggu is known for its eight kilometers of golden sands and is often voted one of the prettiest beaches in the world.

Despite its popularity however it doesn’t feel crowded and still retains much of its rural charm, and popular pastimes here include swimming and surfing.

At sunset you can take in the beautiful views and there are a vast number of places dotted along the sand where you can get a drink and enjoy the sound of the waves.

Double Six beach is a 500 meter stretch of Seminyak Beach connecting the northernmost strip of Legian and southernmost beachfront of Seminyak. On the beachfront you will find restuarants but the real crowds come at sunset with La Plancha Bali spreading colorful parasols, beach bags and mini tables on the sand.

Padang beach in Bali is one of the most famous surf pots, located on the north-western coast of the Bukit Peninsula. Part of the group of world-class surf spots that line the coast of the peninsula, this beach has an exotic 100 meters long stretch of sand that’s accessible down a flight of stairs through a unique rock entrance. The surf has steady sets of barrels during good weather and is also a regular spot for international surfing events.

Do you remember the movie Eat, Pray, Love which featured Julia Roberts? Yes, the Tirta Empul which was used as a location in the film is one of the favorite spots.

This temple sits just outside of Ubud and is made up of a number of pools which are filled by fountains.

The holy waters here are said to be sacred and Hindus from all over Bali come here to bathe. Even travelers have learnt this tradition and take a bathe in the holy water.

Anyone can swim in the waters or you can walk around the complex and check out the pretty architecture and plethora of ornate statues.

Bali is famous for its dances and shows tey put up, and one of these is the Kecak dance which was developed in the 1930s.

The dance takes its name from the ‘cak’ sound that is repeated throughout and is based on the story of the Ramayana (hindu mythological and historical acts based on stories from classic Indian literature)

You can watch performances of the dance all over the island and many shows take place outside under the stars.

Experience the culture in Ubud

Ubud is widely known as the cultural heartland of Bali so if you like art then this is the place to visit.

The town of Ubud lies in the uplands of Bali and is known as a centre for traditional Balinese crafts, dance and culture. Home to one of Bali’s Royal families, the surrounding rainforest and terraced rice paddies are peppered with hindu temples, shrines, and some of Bali’s most famous landscapes.

In the city centre there are dozens of art studios and galleries along the main street selling excellent local crafts, textiles, paintings, and jewelry.

Nungnung Waterfall

Nungnung is one of the lesser visited more powerful waterfall in Bali located roughly one hour outside of Ubud. Many guides don’t recommend it as much so likely to have the whole place all to yourself.

Visit Ulun Danu Temple

Ulun Danu Temple lies at the edge of Baratan Lake in Bedugul in Bali.

This pretty building is dedicated to the goddess of the lake and is one of the quietest and most serene places on the island.

Make sure to check out all the different shrines, each one dedicated to a different god, and look out for the ornate architectural touches such as the intricate carved gates.

Go surfing in Kuta

If you haven’t surfed before or are just looking for some gentle waves then you have to come to the most famous beach in Bali which is Kuta Beach.

The beach sits across from a sand bar which means it has rolling surf that is free of any sharp reefs and you can rent a board here and sign up for a surf lesson, or rent a body board if you want to try something a little less strenuous.

Gili Trawangan, Bali

Gili Trawangan is the largest and most famous of the three Gili Islands due to its well established infrastructure that preceded the neighboring Gili Air and Gili Meno islands. For first timers to the Gili islands it’s a great first “landing point”, where you can enjoy most of the action and explore the quiter islands next door if you wish to.

Gili T has the best range of facilities among three Gili islands, with a larger land size and a good mixture of hotels, restuarants, bars and night life. The main coast near the harbour gets you closer to the ‘castway’ lifestyle, while the secluded western shore offers peace and tranquility for honeymooners and couples.

The most popular way to reach the Gili islands from mainland Bali via the boat port at Pandang Bai. Trip time is roughly 1. 5 hours, schedule and price varies by season and company.

Explore Gili Air Island

Located at the start of the string of the three Gili islands. Gili Air Island is where you can find a more upscale scene and is often considered the best alterntive to the more popular Gili Trawangan. Its combination of White sand beaches and crystal clear water are favourited by divers, snorkelers, and beach lovers alike.

The island is also known for having a range of shops, beach bars, seaside cafes, dive shops, and a variety of accomodation options which you can find inland and around its coastline.

The majestic Handara Gates

The Handara Gates lie at the entrance to a golf course Handara Resort and Golf Bali. THe resort was built in the 1980’s and is surrounded by lush green mountains, crater lakes and a beautiful equatorial rainforest. Taking photos at the entrance has become very popular but if you arrive at sunrise likely no one will be there.

Pancake is almost everyone’s favourite. This vegan based pancake in Canguu serving up healthy pancakes. You can choose from  wholemeal, protein, matcha, blue butterfly pea, coconut gluten free, beetroot or chocolate with a massive variety of toppings.

Try out the wholemeal pancake stacked with banana, strawberries and blueberries covered in home-made peanut butter and granola. Also. try the protein pancakes with egg whites, bacon, berries and maple syrup.

The food here is simply grilled over coconut husks for a wonderful smoky flavor and served with rice and chili sauce.

Kelingking Beach, Nusa Penida Island, Bali

The famous kelingkang Beach remains somewhat hidden within the village of Bunga Mekar on the southweatern coast of Nusa Penida Island. You can still get on th ebeach via roughly a 400-meter hike down that’s a little bit sketchy. Do try the beach if you like to visit less crowded and unexplored places.

The Broken beach is an impressive circular shaped cove on the north west coast of Nusa Penida. Famous for its natural archway that allows the inflow of ocean water, take a stroll around the edge for various beautiful cliff top views.

Diamond Beach, Nusa Penida

Located just a quick 30-40 minute ferry from Sanur, Nusa Penida is famous for its stunning landscapes, towering cliffs and beautiful beaches such as this one. The island itself is still mostly undeveloped and many say it reminds them of what Bali looked like over 30 years ago.

Until only recently Diamond Beach has been totally in accessible. Now the beach is finally open to visitors via a set of stairs that’s been carved into the cliffs. The walk up and down only takes a few minutes and provides stunning views the entire way.

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

The Jatiluwih Rice Terraces are a cultural heritage site in the Tabanan region of Bali, most famous for its dramatic and exotic terraced landscapes. The cool highlands and breathtaking scenery make for the perfect retreat away from the island’s crowded south.

Once a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site candidate, the Jatiluwih rice terraces comprise over 600 hectares of rice fields and are maintained by a traditional water management cooperative known as subak, which dates back to the 9th century.

The entrance to the main area requires a fee that goes to the local village cooperative but is usually covered by tour guides. The views are truly impressive with 180 degrees of gently sloping terraces as far as the eye can see.
